Description

Growing Out Loud is an uncompromising, unapologetic polemic that offers solutions for America’s antiquated food system, as well as arguments that demonstrate the failures of the system. It is also a how-to for community builders and food growers, woven around the memoir of my career in agriculture. Beyond discussing the 360° of food production, the book is also about personal growth, intellectually and spiritually. Growing Out Loud brings history and guidance to a new generation of food revolutionaries. The book provides keys to growing food naturally and organically, connecting communities, and creating local food economies. “I opened the window to my journey, revealing pains, errors, and growth. The lens through which I share my story is a set of principles of growth and action, presented as supplies for ‘The Revolutionary’s Backpack’.” The book also describes “The Politics of Food” (Chapter 6) and the social inequities that feed the system.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR As a student at Harvard, Rashid had a “burning bush” experience that led him to a career in agriculture. His career began with the installation of organic community gardens in San Diego County and extended to work with farmers’ co-ops in the South and managing agribusinesses throughout the United States and 36 countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He also worked at the USDA during the Clinton administration. Rashid chose agriculture as a vehicle for community self-determination. In 2006, Rashid founded Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture in Atlanta to implement his vision of powerful communities. In 2018, Rashid became founder and CEO of The Nuri Group, advancing a new normal: thriving urban communities that grow natural food locally.
